Fill Dirt / Unscreened Topsoil
Before you add topsoil to your landscaping project, you may need to add fill dirt, or unscreened topsoil, to level out your property or fill in any holes in the ground. Fill dirt is also used to elevate the property. Fill dirt is unscreened, meaning it may contain rocks, stones, sand and earth that are unsuitable for planting your sod or flowers and trees.
Why Use Fill Dirt?
Topsoil is screened, which removes any debris, rocks, stones or other inorganic materials that can interfere with root growth. Topsoil is typically reserved for the top layer of the soil, as it is more expensive than fill dirt (fill).
Fill is excellent to provide a sturdy, level foundation for any landscaping or construction project. The most common use of fill is large construction projects, but your smaller landscaping and planting projects can also benefit. Popular uses for fill dirt are the base of planting beds, fixing water drainage problems around foundations and securing retaining walls in a construction project.
