Learning About Mushrooms
Before you get too overwhelmed with this, you are doing nothing wrong. This is the natural process of organic matter decaying, you will find this often is a sign of extra moisture from watering.
- Even though this might upset some gardeners, you have nothing to fear they will not harm your plants.
- With children and pets they are toxic, so simply removing them is your best strategy.
- Leaving them to grow beside your houseplants is an option if children and pets are not a concern, as long as they don’t drive you crazy, they will not harm your plants in any way.
- Fungicides are an option to get rid of them, but I myself would rather just remove them by hand as they grow.
- Some people have attempted to replace the potting soil to only experience them returning once again, actually, this is a good sign you have a healthy potting mix for your plant to grow its best.
Really just removing them by hand is your best strategy if they bother you, this is what I do just because they get on my nerves having them growing in my planters. Often this is a sign you might be overwatering your houseplant, so this could actually be beneficial to learn how to water them more effectively.
Natural Solutions to Mushroom Problems
Just like my health solutions, I prefer to go with natural solutions with my houseplants as well. To help you with this, below are some things that you can use to rid yourself of them if they are driving you crazy.
- Use about two to three tablespoons of dish soap with two gallons of water. Poke holes into the soil around the mushrooms and fill them with soapy water.
- You should mix two tablespoons of baking soda per one gallon of water and stir until completely dissolved. Sprinkle the mixture over the mushrooms and surrounding soil.
- You can also sprinkle baking soda directly on the mushrooms and soil and water them.
- A nitrogen-rich fertilizer will go a long way in ridding a mushroom problem once and for all.
- Simply spraying the mushrooms with a vinegar solution will kill them. If you do this without much precision, you can kill the surrounding plants, so spray with caution.
- Avoid adding coffee grounds to your planters, as this can contribute to the growth of mushrooms.
- The fungus and mushrooms are harmless and can be ignored. Remove the mushrooms as they appear.
- Warm, damp weather triggers their sudden appearance, so maybe you are overwatering might be what the mushrooms are telling you.
- The easiest way to get rid of mushrooms is to move the planter box outdoors where there is bright sunlight.
You can dust sulfur powder on mushrooms because it works as a fungicide. The problem is sulfur can make your potting soil acidic. Neem oil is a natural fungicide that can get rid of several fungi, including mushrooms. Mix 1 tablespoon of neem oil and a tablespoon of dish soap with a gallon of water. Spray this solution on the mushrooms every few days.
Houseplant Growing Guide
Being a gardener since the age of four, I have learned a trick or two. How I got started was from my grandparents, and as the years went by my passion for gardening just grew much like the plants. Since you are reading this, I presume you are interested in learning more about this hobby, so that is what I have for you below.
- Top watering can help flush excess salts and mineral deposits to the bottom of the pot and eventually out of the drainage holes.
- Constantly bottom watering will keep these salts and minerals in the potting mix, so top watering can help keep the root system of your plants healthier.
- To lower the risk of harmful chemicals in your water, allow your tap water to sit out for at least 24 hours before using it to water your plants.
- I keep a gallon milk jug under my kitchen sink filled with water with the lid off, and when it is time to water my plants the chemicals have evaporated into the air.
- Leaf tips turn brown when lost water can’t be replaced for some reason.
- As for the leaves that still have brown tips, you can snip the dead parts away with a pair of scissors without hurting the plant.
- The best water temperature for plants is room temperature, from about 62 to 72 degrees. This is normally the average person’s home temperature, so allowing water to sit for 24 hours is what I recommend.
- Signs of root rot are slow growth, mushy stems, and wilting, yellow, distorted leaves.
Believe it or not, most of our houseplants that die are from overwatering them. This is most common during the winter months, cutting way back on watering during this time of the year is highly recommended.
